Ivory Grips

Here in my workshop at NUTMEG SPORTS I manufacture ivory gun grips.  It is very important to me that you know that you are buying legally imported African elephant ivory.  This material is not a polymer made up from resins and sprinkled with ivory dust.  I cut the grips right from the tusk.   This is the genuine article.  Mostly I make grips for Colt handguns, but I do offer ivory grips for other guns.

My feeling about grips is that they are the single most important aspect of the gun. The grips are the part of the gun that connects it to the man. They must feel right and most of all they must be fit properly. If there is one area of criticism that I would make about most of the guns I see at shows is that the grip fit is weak or poor. I would guess that there are only three or four grip makers and fitters in the U.S. that do a good job and I am happy and proud to say that I am one of them.  The Colt Custom Gun Shop feels strongly about my work.  I am under special contract to them to do ivory work. I have also been contacted by the Smith & Wesson Custom Shop, Turnbull Restorations, U.S. Firearms, Nighthawk Custom, and  The American Historical Foundation to perform ivory work for them.   It is very rewarding to be associated with companies as prestigious as these.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATRONAGE.

Just a word about ivory rating or grading.

You may have seen on the web that one or two ivory grip makers grade their ivory as A, AA, or AAA.  This so called system is a misnomer.  When a tusk is cut we find out if we have real white ivory or varying degrees of grain.  Some dealers make people pay a premium for graining that they themselves did not pay a premium for.  It's a little like double dipping.  My feeling is this:  The customer can request what they would like to see in terms of color.  I will then do my best to meet their request.  Usually I am pretty close if not right on, and there is never any extra charge.

The above pictured gallery of grips and medallions is just a sampling of what we can do for you at NUTMEG SPORTS.  Some of the grips are special and you must contact me for prices.  The rest of the pricing is mentioned later on this page.

The Colt SAA grip must have a line to line fit like no other gun. Each Colt SAA is hand polished by a polisher that is applying a slightly different pressure than the polisher next to him. For that reason the grips from one Colt may or may not fit another Colt. If you are paying $465 for a pair of ivory grips you want them to be pristine. You want them to fit as if they grew on the gun. You don't want to feel any edges. That's the way I make and fit grips. For this reason, I must have the gun so that I can fit the grips to it properly.

If you need ivory grips for a 1911 or 1911 style gun, I do not require the gun to make the grips.  I have several slave receivers here to assure a perfect fit.

I work with only legally imported African Elephant ivory. I can fit ivory to your Colt SAA. The process is simple. I need your gun. There is no special license or FFL required by you to ship a gun to me for grips. You must ship your gun to my BATF registered FFL address and attach an "ADULT SIGNATURE REQUIRED" label. You must ship " Next Day Air" service only using UPS or FED-EX.  My FFL address is:

James V. Alaimo
Nutmeg Sports, LLC
38 Crystal Ridge Drive
Tolland, CT 06084

Please be sure to tell me what configuration you would like for your SAA grips.  That is one piece, two piece, with or without Colt medallions.  If yes on the medallions please specify what style.  If you want, you can keep the cylinder and the existing grips, but I need the frame, backstrap, and trigger guard. You can ship UPS-Next Day Air or Federal Express but NOT by U.S. Mail. The reason for no license requirement for you is we are not doing a transfer...you are shipping your gun to me so I may perform work on it.  Therefore it is referred toas a "Repair and Return".  This procedure is in strict compliance with the BATF guidelines.

GENUINE AFRICAN ELEPHANT IVORY GRIP PRICES

A WORD ABOUT PRICING

The available supply of legally harvested pre-ban elephant ivory in the U.S. is rapidly depleting.  This has resulted in skyrocketing domestic ivory prices.  There has been no legal importation of ivory to the U.S. since 1989 and what is here is running out quickly.  Now is the time to make your move.  Guns that are wearing ivory grips will do nothing but increase in value in years to come.  Our ivory prices are listed at the bottom of this page.  We have made every effort to price our products fairly while still allowing us to make a reasonable profit.  Many seller's prices are much higher than ours.  You may even find a few sellers to be a little lower.  Just remember.......the satisfaction achieved by finding the cheapest price is quickly forgotten with inferior product quality.
